Eating, Living,and Being Beautiful.
The Day Houston Became Screwed Up- June 27th. To some it is just another day on a calendar, while for others, it is a day to celebrate another year of living. For the the city of Houston, Texas, neither one of those notions comes close to what this day actually means. June 27th is not only a symbol, but a perception of a way of life, and an embodiment of a culture. It represents the love and appreciation one has for their city, the music, the inspiration, and the infamous screw. One may ask, how did such a think come about, and the answer given would simply be because of the legendary Dj Screw, (Robert Earl Davis Jr.) followed by a confused look questioning why that was not known in the first place. Dj Screw along with the rest of the S.U.C (Screwed Up Click) created the infamous track, June 27th, and embodied the essence of what Houston and its music is known to be; slowed down and screwed up. The deaths of these legends did not stop this movement, but only amplified it, as this day was created to give tribute to the fallen legends. This movement has influenced a city and will continue to do so for the generations to come. I have decided to give my own little tribute for our fallen legends by asking fellow Houstonians to express what June 27th means to them. Kellyn McKay: June 27th means a lot to me, because its a day that everyone gets to show their appreciation for Houston. “I have so much love for my city and how it has shaped me. Blake Campbell: June 27th is a day celebrating the moment you feel a sense of comfort, the moment you see the Houston skyline, or the moment your at a party and here, slow loud and baggin all in my trunk. So you see today is not just another day in the city of Houston, Texas. No, today is the day where the people come together, celebrate and reminisce on what it is they love so much about being apart of the city, its culture, and its way of life. For the folks who are reading this, and have never heard about the significance of this day, listen well, understand, and do one simple thing. Embrace it. As your riding in your car, raise down your window, turn up the radio, and slowly begin to bob your head to beat of Dj Screw.
